If you want to grow green onions in the garden, you need the right soil conditions and sufficient moisture. At home, however, you can considerably simplify their cultivation, and thanks to the following methods you’ll have them ready for use in just two weeks.

You can grow spring onions in many ways

One option is a plastic bag from which you create a mini greenhouse. Prepare sawdust or toilet paper. Put them into the bag, lay the bulbs on top, inflate and tie the bag. Untie it only when the green shoots of the bulbs reach the top of the bag, which shouldn’t take long.

You can also soak the bulbs in water for two days before planting, changing the water twice a day. That will make their growth easier. You can speed it up further by placing the bag of bulbs in a dark and cool place for three days – a cellar is suitable. Only then transfer them to the windowsill. If you choose this method, do not water the bulbs until you open the bag.

Use a plastic bottle

Another method is growing them in a plastic bottle. Cut off the neck and split the bottle in half. Prepare a base – towels, sawdust and more.

Choose small bulbs and trim off their tops. Plant the bulbs into your chosen substrate as if you were putting them in soil and pour water. Finally, put the other half of the bottle on and place it on the windowsill. After three weeks you may see that the green onion reaches up to 30 cm, but do not remove the top part of the bottle. Water according to the moisture and conditions in which the onion is growing.

Both methods are similar

In both cases greenhouse-like conditions are created for the bulb. You must, however, expect that it will take some time to grow and it’s good to arm yourself with patience. The bulbs will not rot and will certainly sprout. This way you’ll always have green onions at hand.
