The yellowish limescale in a toilet bowl looks really repulsive. It’s actually a precipitated coating of calcium carbonate that forms deposits and over time can even clog pipes.
Vinegar
Vinegar acts as a disinfectant and a limescale solvent. You can use it on a variety of surfaces, both in the kitchen and in the bathroom. Its application when cleaning the toilet can take different forms.
Most effective methods
It’s very effective to pour plain vinegar into a drained toilet bowl and leave it to work for as long as possible. Then scrub the bowl with a brush and flush. If you want to remove limescale from the cistern, it would be a good idea to leave vinegar in it overnight and then rinse with hot water. Before that, empty the cistern and stop the water supply so that the vinegar can act in as concentrated a form as possible. In the morning it’s enough to flush at least twice in succession. As a preventive measure you’ll also fight limescale by occasionally adding a little vinegar to the water in the cistern.
Vinegar with toilet paper
For another effective vinegar trick you’ll need toilet paper in addition to vinegar, letting pieces of it soak up the vinegar. Drain the water from the toilet, wipe the inner walls of the bowl with a dry cloth, and then stick these vinegar-soaked pieces of toilet paper to the inside of the toilet. Let them work for as long as possible. This is targeted cleaning of the inner walls of the toilet bowl that resist all attempts to remove limescale. After a sufficiently long exposure, remove the pieces of paper, finish cleaning the bowl with a brush and flush.
