Meet Spike – a 14-year-old English Cocker Spaniel who is currently recovering from his second stroke. Unfortunately, due to his age and health problems Spike is no longer able to climb the stairs to the second floor and sleep with his owners.
He has had many families
Spike is a 14-year-old English Cocker Spaniel “We took Spike from the shelter when he was 5, about a year after the loss of our dog. Several families had adopted Spike before that, but we cannot understand how anyone could have given him up.
We are, however, very glad that he ended up with us, ” said the owner.
In fact, the dog can no longer climb the stairs on his own.
Spike’s illness
It’s all the sadder because until recently he was always used to sleeping in bed with his owners.
“He always slept on the bed upstairs. So when the stairs became too dangerous for him, it was an immediate switch to sleeping downstairs on the couch with him, ” explains the owner.
Currently the dog is recovering from a second stroke and has difficulty walking on the stairs.
He can’t climb the stairs
It turned out that after the second stroke Spike was unable to walk, so the family had to carry him around the house.
Fortunately this little dog is strong and he has gotten better.
Now, even though he can walk again, he still isn’t strong enough to go up the stairs and sleep where he usually did. In his owners’ bedroom.
What his owners did for him
Because Spike can no longer sleep in his owners’ bedroom, the family decided to sleep with him on the couch every night
“He always makes a big fuss when anyone comes downstairs and has to share their space with him. But as soon as someone cuddles up to him he’s content. Especially in the morning after waking up, he loves to be cuddled. “
They also put measures in place to prevent injuries
The bond between Spike and his owner is very strong. “They are absolutely inseparable.
My father calls him “old bean” and they spend a lot of time together.
My father brings marrow, water and food to the couch and hand-feeds him to make sure he gets his medicine and gains strength. “
We are very glad to have him in our lives
It’s clear that Spike’s family loves him with all their heart and would do anything to make him happy.
“We love him very much and are very happy to have him in our lives.
Hopefully we have made up for his not-so-great start in life by giving him all the love in the world. “
