It’s always the same – you’re sitting outside and after a few minutes they’re already buzzing around you. Or you want to sleep well and the unpleasant buzzing and the bitten spots just won’t let you sleep.

If window screens don’t help and you don’t want to reach for chemical repellents, this idea may come in handy.

It’s a simple and cheap trap that you can make quickly and that will help keep mosquitoes away for days. The trap is most effective indoors, but you can also use it outside, for example on a terrace. Its effectiveness will, however, be lower.

Effective trap that they will rush into

You will need

  • 1.5 l plastic bottle
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar (dissolve it first)
  • 1 teaspoon of dried yeast
  • a piece of dark cloth, newspaper or foil

Cut off the top of the bottle at about one-third of its length.

Pour water into the bottom of the bottle, not warmer than 30 degrees. Add the sugar, mix well. Then sprinkle in the yeast and mix again.

Place the cut-off neck inside the bottle. If this “construction” doesn’t hold, don’t hesitate to glue it. Thanks to this solution the carbon dioxide will be released only through the bottle’s neck and the insects around you will rush into this trap.

Now you must wrap the bottle with a cloth or newspapers and fasten it around the edges.

Place the trap in the dark corners of the room where there is no draft. You can use it outside too, but the effect will be weaker.

Mosquitoes willingly fly toward the smell of fermentation; moreover, they are attracted by the lack of light inside.

When they try to get out of the trap, they move upward, but because of the narrow opening and the sticky walls they sooner or later fall into the water, where they die.

The principle of the bait for mosquitoes

The trap works as long as the fermentation process is ongoing and carbon dioxide is being produced. Then the trap needs to be replaced (about every 5-7 days).

How the mosquito trap works

The trap can also be adapted for other insects – fruit flies, wasps, hornets or flies. For this purpose pour a glass of warm water into the bottle and add pieces of fruit, honey or jam. Such a trap will last up to 2 weeks. Do not forget that the bait must not be completely submerged in the liquid.
