In older models of freezers without an anti-freeze system, an ice layer or a thick layer of frost forms from time to time. So you don’t have to defrost the whole freezer completely every time, we offer you an effective method , which will easily handle this problem. Our reader Janka from Prievidza wrote to us about it and we’d be happy to tell you more.
Janka uses this method to defrost an older freezer at her cottage and says it is really effective.
Guide to defrosting the freezer
1. When you notice frost in the freezer , empty it and place several plastic bottles filled with hot water inside. The ice will melt quickly.
2. Remove remnants of the ice layer, dry the freezer and apply glycerin to the entire surface using a cotton pad. Thanks to this, ice will form much more slowly.
3. Make sure that all the products in the freezer are well sealed so that moisture does not evaporate from them and frost does not form again.
4. Check the freezer door . To seal properly, the sealing gasket must not be damaged. If something is wrong with it, it needs to be replaced. Make sure the freezer door is always properly closed.

My mother-in-law’s trick against frost
If the freezer is already completely free of ice, perform one more important step – apply glycerin to the surface of the dry (!) Freezer using a cotton pad. Ice will then form much later av in a much smaller scope. If you don’t have glycerin, ordinary vegetable oil will also help. Ice usually forms also because you put open food into the freezer that releases moisture. Therefore it is recommended to store food closed, for example in plastic containers.
Check the freezer seal – close the door with a strip of paper. Then try to pull it out. If it comes out easily, the door is not airtight – that’s why ice accumulates so quickly. You should call a specialist and replace the seal.
And one more clever and quick tip for defrosting: place a fan in front of the freezer or use a hairdryer – the ice will start melting right before your eyes! In 30-60 minutes the freezer will be completely defrosted.
