The coronavirus pandemic has an unexpected side effect in Venice. The dirty and smelly canals have turned into crystal-clear “rivers” full of life.
Even now, however, the world is surprisingly changing for the better.
In 2018 China produced the most emissions of any country in the world, more than a quarter of the total amount.
Now, thanks to protective measures against the coronavirus, factory closures, restricted movement of residents, the air over the coronavirus epicenter Wuhan has improved by 10-30 percent.
In recent days several cities have recorded a massive reduction in smog or cleaner water. The reason is the reduction of air and ground transport, the closure of plants and factories, or the reduced number of tourists in the streets. Satellite images captured a reduction of smog over Hong Kong and a 25 percent decrease in carbon dioxide emissions.
