It only takes a few basic ingredients, a short preparation, and the result looks festive even without elaborate decoration. It's suitable not only for Christmas and Advent, but also with coffee, tea, or as a quick sweet finish after lunch.

The puff pastry wreath with apples and walnuts is exactly the kind of dessert that disappears from a festive table faster than you can brew a coffee. It combines delicate puff pastry, aromatic apple filling with cinnamon and crunchy walnuts, so it tastes like a classic Czech apple dessert, but in a modern and very striking presentation.

Preparation procedure

  • Pour hot water over the raisins and let them swell for a few minutes, then drain them. Peel two apples, remove the cores and cut into small cubes. Melt the butter in a pan, add the apples, raisins, sugar and cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes, until the apples soften and lightly caramelize. Finally stir in the chopped walnuts and let the filling cool slightly.
  • Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Unroll the puff pastry onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Spread the apple filling in the center of the pastry in a circular shape, leaving the middle empty.
  • Cut the edges of the pastry into strips of equal width. Alternately fold them over the filling toward the center to create a braided wreath. Slice the remaining apple thinly and, if desired, use the slices to decorate the surface of the wreath.
  • Beat the egg with the milk and brush the entire wreath. Sprinkle the surface with chopped walnuts.
  • Bake the wreath for approximately 30 minutes, until nicely golden and the puff pastry has puffed up. After removing from the oven, let it rest briefly.
  • Before serving, generously dust the wreath with powdered sugar. Serve ideally still warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
