Honey slices are among the most popular Slovak and Czech desserts. Our version with three or two layers of dough and two layers of nut mixture and cream offers a taller cake full of honey fragrance, crunchy nuts and a delicate buttery cream. Prepare a homemade treat that the whole family will love.

Preparation procedure

  • Preparing the dough In a bowl, mix the flour with the sugar and baking soda. Add the eggs, honey and softened butter (or Hera). Dilute the baking soda in the milk, stir into a smooth dough and divide it into three (or two, if you want a taller layer) portions.
  • Baking the layers Roll out or spread each portion of dough into the shape of a baking sheet (25×35 cm) greased with butter and dusted with flour. Bake in an oven preheated to 180 °C: three layers for 10–11 minutes each two layers for 15 minutes Let the layers cool.
  • Preparing the nut mixture In a saucepan, heat the butter, honey and sugar, let it bubble briefly. Stir in the chopped nuts and remove from the heat. Let it cool slightly.
  • Preparing the cream Bring 500 ml of milk to a boil in a saucepan. Mix the remaining 250 ml with the semolina and, stirring constantly, pour it into the boiling milk. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the semolina thickens. Let the pudding filling cool. Beat the butter with the sugar until frothy and gradually whisk in the cooled semolina; flavor with rum.
  • Assembling the dessert Place the first layer on a serving tray, optionally lightly sprinkle with rum. Spread part of the cream on it, place the second layer and spread it with the nut mixture. Cover with the third layer and apply the cream again. Spread the top layer with the remaining nut mixture.
  • Resting Cover the cake tightly and let it rest in the refrigerator for 24 hours so the flavors meld and the cream firms up.
  • Cutting and serving Cut into 12–16 portions with a sharp knife. Serve chilled.
