This chocolate banana loaf mellows and sweetens ripe bananas; cocoa provides intense flavor, and chopped chocolate and nuts add a pleasant texture. It contains no butter or refined sugar and is still wonderfully moist – great as a healthy breakfast, snack, or lighter dessert.

  • Preparing the banana mixture Mash the bananas with a fork in a bowl until smooth. Stir in the eggs and honey until a smooth, liquid batter forms.
  • Dry ingredients Sift the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a separate bowl. Then gradually add them to the banana mixture.
  • Liquid ingredients Pour in the milk and mix thoroughly until the batter is free of lumps.
  • Adding the chocolate and nuts Finally gently fold the chopped chocolate and, if using, the chopped nuts into the batter.
  • Baking Transfer the batter to a greased or parchment-lined loaf pan (e.g. 20×10 cm). Bake in an oven preheated to 175 °C (fan 160 °C) for 50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out almost dry.
  • Finishing and serving After removing from the oven, let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully unmold and let cool completely on a wire rack. Before slicing, you can drizzle with melted chocolate and sprinkle with walnuts.
