You probably also constantly come across people running around the streets holding plastic water bottles in their hands.

However, these bottles and similar plastic containers often contain large amounts of harmful chemicals. They can easily outweigh the benefits of proper hydration.

You should therefore pay close attention to the triangle on the bottom of the plastic containers you use.

Pay special attention to the number in the middle of the triangle.

Each such number represents a different type of chemical from which the item is made.

You’ve certainly noticed it more than once, but didn’t attribute any special meaning to it. However, you should …

1 – PET (Polyethylene terephthalate)
These bottles and containers are intended for single use only. This is because they can leach heavy metals such as antimony.

These chemical substances, also labeled with the EPA mark, disrupt the functioning of your hormonal system.

2 – HDPE (High-density polyethylene)
This is the so-called “good” plastic.

It has the lowest likelihood of harmful substances leaching into the liquid stored in it.

3 – PVC (Polyvinyl chloride)
It is not recommended to use items made from this material.

PVC can release substances into water and food that disrupt hormone function.

4 – LDPE (Low-density polyethylene)
This type of plastic is relatively safe.

With proper use and without mechanical stress, harmful substances should not leach from it into water.

The material is also often used in the production of plastic bags.

5 – PP (Polypropylene)
Again, this is a relatively safe plastic.

Provided it is not exposed to higher temperatures or mechanical stress, it should not release any undesirable substances into drinks and food.

In practice, yogurt cups and some types of water bottles are usually made from it.

6 – PS (Polystyrene)
Warning, it releases carcinogenic chemicals.

You should not use polystyrene under any circumstances for storing drinks or food.

In the case of portable coolers, food must be reliably separated from the walls.

7 – PC (polycarbonate)
For storing food and water, it is the worst material. The reason is the release of BPA (bisphenol A).

Therefore, avoid bottles or other containers made from polycarbonate in all circumstances.
