We have the best tips and tricks for cleaning carpets that anyone who needs to restore even very dirty carpets can use. This works best for you!
This even restored an old carpet at the cottage – a homemade dirt eliminator
Dust and seriously old grime. That’s how our cottage carpet looked. It was rolled up in the attic and when we unrolled it, our eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. The carpet is rare; grandma received it years ago as a wedding gift from an affluent family from Karlovy Vary and I couldn’t bear to throw it away. Nothing worked on it, we tried baking soda and even vinegar, but only my mother-in-law’s recipe helped. Hopefully it will help you too.
We need:
- water
- classic bile soap – the cheapest one, you can buy it in any drugstore
- 1 scoop of liquid laundry gel (I had Persil)
- brush
- dry cloth
Procedure:
I heated the water over a flame and added grated soap (the soap wasn’t whole anymore, about 3/4 left). When it dissolved, I took it off the heat, poured it into a saucepan, added the gel and then scrubbed the entire surface of the carpet and let it sit in the fibers so the dirt would loosen. Finally I wiped it well with a dry cloth and let it dry completely. The result was excellent; I really didn’t expect it to be so good!
Thanks to my neighbor’s trick I no longer need a carpet cleaner
I have carpets in every room of the apartment and although they don’t cover the entire floor area, their maintenance has been hard work. I also want to say that I tried old wives’ remedies too, but they didn’t give me the desired effect. The best thing that works for me is this simple recipe from my neighbor – salt and fabric softener.
I’ve used it for years, it takes minimal work and the result is fantastic – cleanliness, revived colors.
A scent not only on the carpet, but throughout the apartment.
This maintenance takes 10 minutes and is enough to do once every 3 months.
We need:
- water
- fabric softener
- salt
- microfiber cloth
Procedure:
First, vacuum the carpets as usual. For just under a liter of water I put two tablespoons of salt and a tablespoon of fabric softener. Dip the microfiber cloth in the solution as if you were mopping the floor and simply run it over the entire carpet (do not scrub too hard) — the carpet is cleaned in 10 minutes in the kitchen and even the living room. The result? The carpet’s color is beautifully revived and the carpet is clean and fragrant. And best of all, it will smell lovely throughout your apartment. I clean carpets this way once every 3 months and they always stay like new. I don’t use vinegar, baking soda or other old wives’ tricks; this proved the most effective for me. If you want to save work before the holidays, I recommend it to you too.
To revive and deeply clean light-colored carpets
We need:
• 1 tablespoon of baking soda
• 1/3 cup of vinegar
• 1 teaspoon of dish soap
• 1.5 cups of boiling water
Procedure:
First carefully mix all the ingredients and pour them into a bottle. Shake it thoroughly. Spray the mixture evenly onto the carpet before it cools. Let it act for a few minutes and then clean with a brush — this is perfect, even if you have stains on the carpet, they disappear.
Baking soda and the cleaning agent remove dirt and stains, and the vinegar revives the color.
I also include my list of how to clean different types of stains on the carpet:
Blood stains come out best if you dab them with a damp cloth and a mild ammonia solution in cold water.
Ink stain – place a cloth soaked in hot milk on the stain as soon as possible, let it sit and then clean thoroughly.
Stains from green vegetables – spinach, lettuce and other green vegetables: simply rub with a cut potato and then clean with shaving gel.
Glue stains come off best with acetone, but you should first test whether it won’t also remove the color.
For egg stains the best is vinegar water.
For coffee stains pour a little sparkling mineral water over them immediately, leave for a moment and then blot. If a spot remains, clean it with rubbing alcohol.
Chocolate stains come off best with this solution: mix egg yolk, apply to the stain and leave for at least a few minutes. Then rinse well with warm water.
Wax stains: place absorbent paper on the spot and iron. Iron until all the wax is absorbed onto the paper.
Old trick to restore a carpet’s color:
Your grandmothers may have used it too. Carpets after this unusual trick shone with color and cleanliness. You don’t have to worry about a smell either; carpets never smelled afterwards as you might think. So, sprinkle well‑squeezed raw sauerkraut over the entire surface of the carpet and rub it thoroughly across the whole area. The cabbage will absorb dirt and dust, revive the colors and clean the carpet deeply. Then take it outside, shake out the cabbage well and let the carpet dry. The carpet will shine like new. And in winter, carpets were always well beaten in the snow. It was the simplest and cheapest way to clean them.
