Are you good swimmers? Fit? Fine, and what if we told you that it still might not be enough? There are phenomena that even the most experienced do not anticipate.

Treacherous currents that pull you underwater, carry you away from the shore and leave you panicked and exhausted, among other dangers. After reading this article, however, you will be prepared for them.

A rip current will catch you and pull you away from the shore

The most common phenomenon you may encounter at the sea or ocean is the so-called rip current, or „Pulling current“. It is named exactly for how it behaves – it literally grabs you and drags you from land out into the sea. The phenomenon occurs when on one stretch of the coast/beach there are larger waves and on another, just beside it, there are smaller waves.

This creates a strong current that at first glance is fairly inconspicuous, but with a little attention you can still notice it. You can see what it looks like in the pictures. Unlike the rest of the surface it appears calm and you won’t see bubbles or foaming caused by waves. If you’ve been at the water and experienced bigger waves, you may have experienced this phenomenon as well.

How to escape drowning?

The important rule in the case of this dangerous phenomenon is to stay calm. The water current pulls you away from land and you will logically try to swim toward the shore. Definitely not this way. The current is very strong and you will hardly escape it. It is important not to swim straight toward the shore, but rather to the side. This will get you out of the narrow, powerful current and you will once again return to land.

Rip currents have caused numerous drownings worldwide, so it’s good to know how to outsmart them. You already know, show the article to your friends and enjoy a slightly safer summer fun.
