We are admired by people who can maintain calm and self-control in all situations. We call it wisdom and hope that one day we will become that too. A lot depends on the ability to avoid certain behaviors that prevent us from being happy and moving forward.
1. They don’t let others ruin their mood
If your self-esteem and mood depend on how you feel about yourself with people, it means that your happiness does not belong to you. When intelligent people rejoice in their achievements, they don’t allow others’ opinions and merits to cloud that joy.
Regardless of what others think or do. It should not affect your opinion of yourself.
2. They don’t forget
Emotionally literate people easily forgive offenses, but that doesn’t mean they forget them. Forgiveness means letting go of the unpleasant situation and moving on. However, that doesn’t mean the offender gets a second chance.
3. Know when to stop
Smart people know how important it is to take care of themselves. In a conflict situation we often lose control of our emotions and rush into a fight in which we are obviously doomed to lose. Anyone who knows how to understand and manage their emotions is able to appreciate when they must stop.
4. They don’t try to be ideal
Emotionally mature people know that no ideal exists. In the pursuit of absolute perfection you will always be disappointed. As a result you will torment yourself that you cannot achieve what you want and overthink what you did wrong. Smart people rejoice in what they have achieved.
5. They don’t live in the past
Smart people know that success largely depends on the ability to lose and move on. However, this is not possible if you cling to old mistakes. When you live in the past, it becomes your present and robs you of your future.
6. They don’t focus on problems
Your emotional state directly depends on what you think. When you fully focus on current problems, you encounter negative emotions and a stressful state. Emotionally intelligent people know that you must think not about the problems, but about their solutions.
7. They don’t befriend those who constantly complain
Lovers of complaining endlessly savor their problems. To feel better, they need sympathetic listeners who will pity them. It’s better to stay away from them, otherwise they’ll drown you in their negativity.
8. They don’t get angry
The negative emotions we experience when we are angry are a reaction to stress. When an immediate threat approaches us, such behavior is necessary for survival. But when it’s all behind us, hidden resentment only harms us. Over time this can even affect health. Being angry means being in a state of constant stress and smart people try with all their might to prevent it.
9. They don’t agree to what they really don’t want.
For many of us it is very difficult to say the word „no“. Meanwhile it is a very powerful tool that you must use safely. By refusing to take on new commitments, you give yourself the opportunity to fulfill existing obligations. This list of course is not meant to be exhaustive. But if you can learn to avoid at least these destructive behavior patterns, you’ll do yourself a great favor.
