Chinese garlic is a relic of past times. Some time ago a large quantity of Chinese garlic was imported to us, but it had no taste or aroma and therefore people soon stopped buying it. The best option therefore is to grow home garlic.

Garlic harvest

If your cultivation succeeds, you can expect many benefits. The garlic will smell perfect, and with its pleasant pungency it will have real strength.

How to achieve a perfect yield?

The right type of garlic

Not all garlic is the same. The best choice is definitely seed garlic. Avoid garlic sold for consumption, because you don’t know its origin and therefore not its future taste and strength.

Ideally, go to a smaller shop where you can buy garlic directly from local farmers and the shop owner knows where his garlic comes from.

Soil

You’re best off if you start attending to garlic cultivation already in the autumn, when you prepare everything, and immediately after the end of winter you begin the actual growing.

The soil should allow the dirt to be well aerated and not be too compact. We must also provide the garlic with enough fertilizer.

Planting

When planting garlic it is essential to apply the right strategy. If you follow our recommendation and use only seed garlic, the top item on your list of priorities should state that it’s important to first separate the whole bulb into individual seedlings (cloves). Further, it’s good to let the garlic cloves soak for about 4 hours in polysulfide sulfur, which you can buy at a garden center. Then leave the cloves in water for another 2 hours.

You can then start planting the garlic. Ideally plant the garlic cloves at a depth of 5-6 cm and 20 cm apart. Plant garlic in rows that are about 15 cm apart from each other.

Care

To ensure a flawless yield, you can’t just plant garlic and leave it. It’s also necessary to attend to the garlic during its development. The primary rule is that the soil itself should be aerated enough to provide sufficient oxygen. Likewise, make sure to check for weeds. If they appear, they should be removed.

Water the garlic regularly so that it is kept moist but does not dry out.

Harvesting the crop

As soon as the garlic tops begin to fall toward the ground, it’s the right time to harvest. Pull the plants out of the soil very carefully so as not to damage them.
