You probably use expensive fabric softeners from the drugstore for washing laundry. But they often don’t live up to the promises made in advertising. Even the most expensive fabric softener can cause more harm than good.

Fabric softener

Fabric softener can have a very negative effect not only on your laundry but also on towels. Its composition often acts like a glue that binds the fibers together and thus locks all the dirt and grease directly inside them. The fabrics then feel too rough and inflexible to the touch – which we can especially see with towels.
Dirt, hair and bits of fibers that loosen during washing are, under the influence of the fabric softener, joined together and settle in the internal parts of your washing machine. Over time they become the cause of unpleasant odors and mold.

Why should you add vinegar to the washing machine every time you wash towels?

A simple trick to deal with smelly towels

It is important to mention the unwanted effects, such as irritation and allergic reactions, that fabric softener can cause.

Homemade recipe that costs next to nothing

Make a bio-homemade fabric softener that will make your laundry smell lovely while protecting both your washing machine and your laundry. It softens water, prevents limescale buildup and also disinfects the washer from the inside because it prevents the formation of mold. You can make it for next to nothing!

What happens after the very first wash

  • Towels are softer to the touch.
  • Laundry smells wonderful (you don’t need to worry about a vinegar smell) and there is no risk of allergic reactions.
  • The inside of the washing machine is protected against limescale, you don’t have to spend money on water softeners and washing machine tablets.
  • You don’t have to worry about mold developing inside the washing machine.
  • There is no risk of buildup of static electricity inside the fabrics.

We will need

  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 750 ml of boiled hot water
  • 800 ml of plain or apple cider vinegar
  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oil
  • A container (at least 4 liters)
  • A bottle for storage

Instructions

Pour water into the container and then add the baking soda and vinegar – the substances will react vigorously – sputter and foam, so the container must be sufficiently large.
Stir well until the foam begins to subside. Pour the mixture into a plastic container, add the essential oil.
Store in a cupboard just like regular fabric softener.
Use ½ a cup per wash.
