Asparagus is becoming an increasingly popular vegetable that is gradually finding its place in our kitchens. It is considered a medicinal gift of nature and its scientific name is Asparagus officinalis. And, in fact, it is also recognized as an aphrodisiac!
All you need is to cook or bake it properly and you can combine it with whatever you like most.
Asparagus originates from the Black Sea region and today is cultivated in almost the entire world. We distinguish more than 25 varieties of asparagus, but in our stores you will mainly find white and green.
And why have people fallen in love with it? It’s not only because of its taste, but especially due to its positive effect on the body. It is ideal even when you are on a diet, because it is low in calories.
It is full of vitamins and also contains folic acid, iron, potassium, calcium, and fiber.
It has a diuretic effect, thereby helping to drain fluids from the body. The asparagus season begins in April and lasts until the end of June, so you can enjoy it right now!
White asparagus has a more delicious taste and green a more peppery one, and it is used primarily in salads
Although white asparagus is more delicious, it is woodier, so clean it well before cooking/baking. A potato peeler is enough. It is cleaned from top to bottom, but beware, not the tips! It is important to really clean it thoroughly, because otherwise it would be bitter and you would not like it very much.
Preparing asparagus is really simple. Cut off the bottoms (about 1cm). It is cooked so that the tips are not submerged. They will cook only in the steam. It is cooked for 5 to 10 minutes, but if you have very fresh asparagus, you only need to cook it for a shorter time. You can also roast it in the oven on a baking sheet and sprinkle with cheese. There are really many variations.
It is used as a side dish for meat, for fish, in pasta, soups are made from it or you simply cook it and serve it with your favorite sauce (cheese or hollandaise are common).
