What you’ll need
You hardly need anything and you don’t even have to be a chef. You can prepare this dish either on the grill or in the oven. If you like it, there’s nothing stopping you from making it regularly. Prepare 2 onions, half a kilo of minced meat, a quarter cup of parsley, a quarter cup of mushrooms, a teaspoon of dark sugar, a teaspoon of spicy ketchup, a teaspoon of soy sauce, a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, a quarter cup of breadcrumbs, a pack of bacon (sliced), a bottle of barbecue sauce. This dish goes well with
- grilled greens
- baked potatoes
- as an appetizer
Preparation
First peel the onions. Cut them into quarters or halves (depending on size) and separate the outermost layers. Do not separate the core, but finely chop it. In a bowl mix the meat, chopped onion, mushrooms (also finely chopped), parsley, seasonings and breadcrumbs. Form balls and wrap them with the onion layers from the sides. Then wrap the onion-covered balls in bacon. You’ll need about three slices of bacon per ball. Secure with toothpicks so the shape doesn’t fall apart during grilling.
Now place the balls either into a preheated oven (the temperature should be 220 degrees Celsius). Bake for forty minutes. You can line the baking tray with baking paper beforehand, or bake on a drop of oil. Bacon is fatty on its own, so you don’t need much oil. You can also grill over an open fire. And that’s it. Don’t they look good enough to eat? Believe it, they taste even better than they look. Serve with a side dish or as a starter. They go well with rice as a family lunch.
