It’s hard to believe that just a few decades ago it was completely different. Mothers under socialism struggled with a small selection and shortages of goods – and they handled it brilliantly.
See what motherhood looked like under the previous system
Whether you raised your children in the era of cloth diapers and knitted sets, or enjoyed your offspring in the age of disposable diapers and modern baby monitors, the principle remains the same – you care about fragile human life and you try to provide everything. you need it.
Whenever various things and information are available – whether it’s breastfeeding, parenting, or anything else. See how women dealt with motherhood a few decades earlier. It’s interesting that these things are still in trend today.
Healthy snack for children
Baby food is a perennial evergreen on the baby food market. The overnight accommodation in the picture is from 1979 and cost 2.60 Kč at the time – hardly comparable with today’s prices (although it should be taken into account that wages in 1979 were much lower than today).
Besides being a quick and healthy breakfast, it was also popular with moms thanks to the practical jars. If washed well, it can also be used for storing preserves, filling with fruit or as a container for homemade snacks.
Breakfasts are on the rise these days. In addition to the innumerable flavors on the market – from fruit to vegetables – they are also available in new, atypical packages – so-called pouches. Children love them, they are ideal for travel, but you can no longer cook breakfast in them.
Sunar as a milk substitute
Opinions on breastfeeding are constantly changing. Recently, however, the view has stabilized that, where possible, a child should receive natural mother’s milk – because of the antibodies contained in it. But what to do if the milk is lost?
Nowadays we can choose from many different brands of artificial foods and other vitamins that provide the child with the necessary nutrients. In the past such a choice did not exist, but that does not mean the child would go hungry. In case the mother lost her breast milk, Sunar was prescribed by the pediatrician.
Sunar is actually dried whole milk. This supplement has been produced since 1950 and many mothers still swear by it.
Eco-friendly changing with cloth diapers
It may seem that cloth diapers became obsolete long ago with the advent of disposables – but that is far from the truth. Environmentally minded parents keep returning to them and can’t praise them enough. Using cloth diapers is beneficial both for nature and for the child. The main arguments for using cloth diapers are as follows:
They are more financially advantageous
They are kinder to the environment
They are healthier for the baby
They are chemical-free
The truth is, however, that the material from which new cloth diapers are made is much better than fifty years ago. Classic cloth diapers were (and still are) demanding to maintain. When washing them, it is important to choose a gentle detergent that does not irritate the baby’s sensitive skin.
Cloth diapers were among the most basic items of baby equipment. Even before the child was born, these diapers had to be carefully boiled and ironed. If they were made of quality cotton, the child was content and truly “like in cotton”.
Oil and sprinkle the bottom
Baby skin is extremely sensitive and can be easily irritated. With today’s wide selection of ointments and various products, it can be difficult to find the right product for your child. Mothers used to have it simpler – Avril oil and baby powder from the same brand were a sure bet.
These products even became teenagers’ weapons against annoying acne. A cream intended for stretched skin is still used today to treat acne. The gentle oil (with a very typical scent) was again a guarantee of soft skin.
Sunar bottle
Infant bottles have probably evolved the most. Today they are made to fit babies well and there is an endless number of color combinations. A huge difference compared to the originals.
The typical baby bottle used under socialism was glass with a screw-on plastic cap that also held the nipple. The bottle had a round closure to prevent spilling. Nipples had to be carefully boiled and often fit awkwardly into the cap.
Since the bottles were glass, they usually broke when dropped on the floor – and that happened very often.
Knitted set from grandma
Beautiful clothing was scarce and women often resorted to making their own. Knitting was one of the most popular ways to create an original piece. Few grandmothers resisted knitting a tuning kit for their granddaughter.
