Cutting onions is probably the least favorite part of cooking. At the same time, however, it is a basic technique that every cook must master, even the home cook. One of the reasons nobody likes it is surely the tears and stinging in the eyes, which are unpleasant for everyone. However, you can greatly simplify this unpleasant activity with an easy trick.
Incredibly easy trick
There are many ways to cut an onion. You can slice it into rings and add it to a salad in that form, or you can finely chop it and heat it in a pan with meat or add it to a sauce. If you want to get perfect rounds or rings, we’ve come up with the best trick you can find. It will greatly simplify and speed up this troublesome task. The tools you need are very simple and basic. You only need three things:
- onion,
- knife,
- comb for curly hair.
Unconventional kitchen method
It may seem a bit strange, but you will indeed need a comb. It’s a classic comb with a handle and long metal teeth, often used for curly hair. If you don’t have one at home, you can buy one at any drugstore for a few crowns. It will help you a lot when cutting and will save a lot of time, tears and stinging eyes. And all you need for it is an ordinary comb.
Simply clean the onion as you normally would. Then push the comb in halfway. This creates individual grooves or lines that you can cut through. Cut the onion in each of the gaps and you’ll get perfect slices that you can then separate into uniformly regular rings and add to a salad, or fry in batter. You can use a similar method when dicing. You just need to cut the onion in half first, stick the comb in and then slice the onion through the gaps from two directions. You’ll get beautiful small or medium-sized cubes that will look great in a dish.
