We move our hands practically constantly, and injuries in these areas are among the most common. Most often it is a wrist injury, but there are also others that can be much more serious.
They can occur due to inflammation, broken bones, infection, an abnormal growth, cysts and, last but not least, also due to tumors.
However, not every injury must be immediately serious. It is important, however, to be able to recognize the symptoms and know when it’s necessary to see a doctor.
Tenosynovitis
Tenosynovitis is an inflammation of the synovium that surrounds the tendon and is filled with fluid.
The inflammation is usually caused by trauma or strain and mostly affects people who are exposed to very heavy psychological stress.
De Quervain’s disease
Patients with this syndrome suffer from tendon pain at the wrist. It can be seen on the back of the hand when the fingers are straightened.
It primarily affects the tendons of the thumb muscles, which results in limited movement in this area.
This condition is often caused by chronic overuse of the wrist and hand.
Villonodular Tenosynovitis
This problem is caused by a tumor in the hand. The lumps usually occur at the thumb, index finger or middle finger, but they can also be found in the wrist, hip, ankle, knee, spine and shoulders.
These tumors are usually painless. Only 21% of patients feel some pain.
Ganglions
Enlarged nodules in the wrist are lumps that arise from the degeneration of a synovial cyst or some other connective tissue or fibrous structure along the joint – usually a ligament or tendon.
Their formation may be associated with a past injury, but with a 50-70% probability it is a ganglion. They usually grow up to a size of 2.5 cm.
Lipomas
Lipomas are benign tumors in the wrist area and most often arise in the subcutaneous adipose tissue. Lipomas are usually accompanied by pain and increased sensitivity.
In most cases they appear in men and in people who suffer from obesity.
