Every day we spend some time caring for our body, whether in the interest of health or purely for aesthetic reasons, or both. But do we really do everything as thoroughly and conscientiously as necessary? Or is there something we overlook that has a significant impact on our body? One of these areas is oral hygiene, to which most of us probably now pay attention only automatically and not very thoroughly.

Not just the teeth, but the red part too

Brushing or cleaning the tongue is just as important as cleaning the teeth. We probably know this, yet our daily routine is so ingrained that we remember it only after leaving the bathroom, when reading some health magazine, or during a visit to the doctor who looks into our mouth. Meanwhile, the surface of the tongue is the most common and intense site of bacterial growth.

This is responsible not only for unpleasant breath, but usually also for the seeds of many diseases. And because we expose the tongue “on display” during every communication with other people, we can also more easily pass something on to them. Regular cleaning of the tongue can thus prevent the most common illnesses, which are colds and coughs or other unpleasant conditions that mainly manifest in the throat and oral cavity.

How to brush and clean your tongue?

  • Put toothpaste and a little baking soda on your toothbrush.
  • The first step is to brush the front of the tongue and then move backward into the depths of the oral cavity.
  • The further you reach, the more you reduce the risks of inflammation and disease.
  • You will probably struggle a bit with the gag reflex.

After brushing, rinse your mouth several times with lukewarm water. Also remember to thoroughly clean and disinfect the toothbrush itself to remove all bacteria picked up from the mouth. Otherwise they could easily get back in during the next tooth brushing. Besides removing disease-causing agents, this cleaning will increase your taste sensitivity and freshen your breath, so you don’t have to spend money on mints.
