Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps the proper processing of essential minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. Unlike other substances, in addition to the usual intake from food it can also be absorbed through the skin from sunlight. Vitamin D is necessary for proper bone growth, which is why its supplementation is recommended not only for adults but especially for children. Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is necessary throughout life to effectively prevent physiological changes in bone mass, as well as other problems.
How vitamin D deficiency manifests
Vitamin D deficiency can cause a range of ailments and primarily manifests as painful conditions, but also as psychological problems.
Magnesium deficiency and headaches
Low vitamin D levels cause a reduced ability of the body to metabolize magnesium. Magnesium is mainly responsible for muscle pains but also for migraines. Supplementing vitamin D with appropriate supplements or sun exposure together with increased magnesium intake can achieve a significant alleviation of migraine conditions. Muscle pains caused by magnesium deficiency can also lead to increased physical fatigue.
Insomnia and depression
Vitamin D deficiency also affects the nervous system and influences brain function. Low levels can manifest as depression or sleep problems, promote anxiety, or deepen psychological imbalance.
Bone and joint pain
In addition to magnesium, vitamin D also participates in the metabolism of cortisol and calcium. When these are deficient, the quality of bone and joint tissue deteriorates, and implicitly mobility as well. Similarly, low vitamin D levels can contribute to back pain – of the spine, which does not provide the body with sufficient support.
How to properly obtain vitamin D
Ideal vitamin D supplementation occurs not only through consuming foods and supplements but also from sunlight. One should, especially on sunny days, take at least short walks. With very low levels, extend time in the sun. Dietary supplements must also be combined with the minerals whose metabolism you want to support.
