Sympathy – feeling the positive sides and abilities in other people. Sympathy is only a step away from empathy. Empathy is the ability to feel another person’s emotions on yourself and, based on that, decide how we will relate to them. Empathetic people are very rare personalities. They may ease the pain of the other person, but they can catch a lot of bad things from them and burden their own life.

This ability then cannot function at 100 percent, which is a pity. If you have ever found yourself in the company of a negative person, did you feel their emotions affecting you? Maybe you became tired and drowsy after a few minutes. You need to learn how to protect yourself from people who send this toxic energy into the air.

How to stop absorbing negative energy?

If someone complains about you, or puts you down in front of others, stop taking it personally and don’t fixate on them to make them like you. This will put you more into negative thinking and you will worsen the situation even more. Be satisfied with yourself at last and start to like yourself. Show yourself that you love yourself and keep others’ opinions far away from you.

If you have someone around who often feels entitled to make outrageous demands of you, pay attention. It may go to extremes. A person invites you to dinner once and then you can’t get rid of them; they will spend time at your place every day. They will dirty your floor and won’t bother to clean their shoes. Being generous is a fantastic thing for people who know how to appreciate it sufficiently and won’t betray you. However, there is a thin line between generosity and abuse. Nothing will happen if you tell someone no, as often as you need to.

Stop feeding the monster

Energy vampires. These personalities parasitize to capture your attention and suck the last drop of happiness and energy out of you. You emotionally invest in work or people. You will feel fantastic but in the end you will find yourself exhausted and many problems will remain unresolved. It is not your duty to fixate on other people’s problems, especially when those people don’t know how to stand up and solve their problems themselves.

Sometimes you need a break from everyone and everything. So prepare a weekend or an afternoon for it, or at least an hour for yourself and your activities. Get out into nature. Notice the simplicity of the natural environment, the awareness that we have plants, animals and earth. Walk away from the modern world. Breathe deeply and meditate. Focus on your body and breathe fresh oxygen. You will feel fresher and less prone to absorbing negative energy. You yourself know best how you feel. You are 100 percent responsible for that, and for what thoughts you maintain in your consciousness. Once you decide to be responsible for your feelings, you can free yourself from the influence of others.

Return to nature

Sometimes all you really need is a break from other people. Their chaotic energies can be hard to tune out, so give yourself a weekend, an afternoon, or even just an hour for yourself and go to a quiet place.

Let the voices of nature in your head replace the noise and chaos of the modern world. Notice the simplicity of nature, the absence of ulterior motives and the coexistence of all things – plants, animals and the earth.

Breathe deeply and meditate. Focus on filling your body with fresh oxygen and uplifting your spirit.

When you then return to your daily routines, you will feel refreshed and less prone to absorbing others’ negativity.

Remember who is responsible for you

You are the only ones responsible for how you feel. You are 100% responsible for what you allow to influence your thoughts and emotions. If any component of your happiness is out of balance, you are the only one who has the ability to fix it.

Your perception of yourself is more powerful than anyone else’s perception. That is only true until you decide to give it up and seek approval from someone else.

Once you decide to be responsible for your feelings, you free yourself from others’ influence. When you are confident in who you are and how you want to feel, it is much harder for others to throw you off balance.

Make an intentional decision and take control of the positivity in your life. Choose situations that increase your energy and meet only with people who add to who you are.

Love yourself enough and say “no” whenever the situation requires it. Leave environments that do not serve your interests.

And remember – you are responsible for your life experiences. Make them for yourself and make them phenomenal.
