Maybe you wash in a way that accelerates your washing machine’s deterioration.
It isn’t limescale that is destroying your washer, but fabric softeners, exclusive use of the 40-degree program and too much detergent, which unknowingly ruin this expensive machine before its time.
Here are the typical mistakes when doing laundry
Rinse aid
Substances leached from softeners promote mold growth. Mold forms in the fabric softener dispenser, on the inner walls of the washer and on its components. During washing, pieces of the slimy mold that break off now and then get into the water and from there onto your clothes. Resistant microorganisms survive even drying.
Solution: Don’t use fabric softener at all! If the water is hard, sprinkle the drum with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
Always wash at a low temperature
It’s natural that you want to protect your clothes and save energy, so you use water at 30–40 degrees Celsius. Most people do. But that’s the problem, because these programs leave a lot of water in the machine after spinning. In the warm, humid conditions black mold then thrives.
The solution is to do a wash at 60–90 degrees once a week. This sterilizes the washer and destroys mold (towels, kitchen cloths and bed linen should be washed this way).
Washing with an incorrect load weight
Overloading the machine and washing too small an amount of laundry both harm the washer. Find out the ideal load weight for your machine!
