Do you clean regularly and is a clean home your best calling card? Then you surely know which places in the household are the dirtiest and suffer from the greatest number of bacteria and viruses.
Everyone will probably think of the toilet bowl first. You may be surprised, but according to experts the toilet is not usually the source of household contamination. The trash can is often not a breeding ground for bacteria either, provided you empty it regularly.
So which places are the most contaminated in the whole apartment and what should you focus on when cleaning?
1. Inside the dishwasher
A dishwasher washes, so why would it be dirty? The dishwasher is used for daily washing of dishes and cutlery; during the wash cycle the appliance fills with water, and food residues, grease, or undissolved detergent cling to surfaces and crevices. At higher concentrations this leads to an unbearable smell that is hard to get rid of, so pay close attention to cleaning the dishwasher.
2. Door handles and light switches
Where does a large amount of microbes and bacteria concentrate? Definitely on door handles and switches, because all family members use them, and do so frequently. It is advisable to clean these places more often and more thoroughly.
3. Sink and kitchen drain
Did you know that the sink and kitchen drain contain a larger amount of coliform bacteria than the toilet bowl? According to experts, this is caused by dishwashing and the use of cleaning agents that adhere along with food scraps, meat and grease to the surface of the sink or inside the kitchen drain. Don’t forget to use vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice for cleaning to disinfect these areas and remove bacteria.
4. Mobile phone
Not a second without your phone? People who constantly carry it with them and take it to the toilet or bathroom can find up to 25,000 bacteria per cm² on the surface of their phone, according to scientists. That’s more than is found on a blanket in a doghouse. Wouldn’t it be worth disinfecting the phone more often?
5. Remote control
Another item that is among the most contaminated is the remote control. No wonder — everyone in the household takes it in hand, switching channels while watching TV, and also eating while watching, so a whole range of microbes and bacteria can be found among the buttons.
