How to prepare houseplants for winter? Houseplants do not like changes in temperature in the apartment. What to do so they don’t dry out during the winter? If it has happened to you so far that your houseplants dried out during the winter, it is very likely that you made a mistake in their care in autumn. To avoid repeating the same mistake over and over, we will tell you how to care for plants in autumn to protect them.

How to prepare houseplants for winter

  1. Repotting – if possible, wait with repotting until spring. Repot only if, for example, the plant’s roots are washed out, or if the original flowerpot is already too small for it
  2. Adding nutrients – from autumn to spring plants are not fertilized. Therefore do not add fertilizer, nutrient solution or salt. During the period of dormancy you would rather harm your plant by fertilizing. In the winter period there is less light, their development slows down. They do not need additional energy
  3. Light – do not move your plant to a brighter place in winter. Autumn and winter light is sufficient for their rest
  4. Watering – water less in autumn, because the colder the weather, the less water the plant absorbs. However, in a well-heated room it is necessary to water the plant adequately. Moisten its leaves (except violets, they do not like being moistened. Their leaves often then rot.)

Plants that bloom in winter require different care

This mainly concerns orchids, Christmas cacti and poinsettias. These plants require different care in winter because they bloom in winter. They therefore need enough nutrients, light and moisture. That does not mean, however, that you should expose them to direct sunlight and overdo it with the watering can! The Christmas cactus will do best in partial shade on a north-facing window. In excessive heat the cactus does not bloom, so place it in a room where the temperature is rather lower (the ideal temperature is 12 – 15 °C). Water the cactus once a week.
