Soaps are necessary to keep our bodies clean and fresh.
However, when it comes to choosing a soap, most of us prefer one that not only cleans but also removes bacteria from the skin.
Research, however, shows that soaps made from known carcinogens can indeed cause cancer.
One of these relatively common substances is triclosan. It has been shown to be a compound that promotes the growth of cancer cells.
What the Korean study found
A recent study conducted by researcher Kyung-Chul Choi and his scientific team at the Korea Research Institute of Biology and Biotechnology at the South Korean national university revealed the harmful effects of triclosan, particularly on the hormonal system.
The point is that triclosan itself is an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen activity.
In this way it negatively affects the activity and even the production of testosterone and other hormones.
In the case of breast cancer, triclosan negatively affects not only the body’s endocrine system but also induces cell mutations.
Another substance used in antibacterial soaps is octylphenol and it is also a carcinogen.
The worst situation with antibacterial soaps is when the mentioned substances are present at the same time. It has been shown that both cause strong cell mutations in laboratory animals as well as in humans.
It is worth remembering that it does not always have to be just soaps. The mentioned chemicals can also be contained in other cosmetic products, such as:
- liquid hand soaps
- shower gels
- shampoos
- mouthwashes
Conclusion
What is peculiar about the whole thing is that many environmental advocacy groups, such as the American EWG (Environmental Working Group), have been warning about these dangers for quite some time.
However, the power of corporations has so far always been able to silence these critical voices through lobbying and the corruption of state regulatory bodies.
It is therefore important to continuously spread this information so that people are informed and can choose products that are safe for them.
