Most common causes of insomnia
Insomnia often occurs under the influence of many negative mental states that appear regularly in many people and which you have surely encountered yourself. For this reason the brain cannot relax, because it absorbs these troubles every day and carries them over to the next day. What exactly are these troubles? What should you watch out for and try to eliminate from your life?
These are mainly:
- stress,
- anxiety,
- problems at work and in the family.
Another common reason is medications prescribed by your doctor. For many drugs you will find insomnia listed as a side effect. These are mainly drugs such as analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs and antihypertensives. Some of them may cause drowsiness at first, but after a few days the situation can completely reverse and you may actually be unable to fall asleep.
How much sleep do you need?
Sleep is like charging the battery of a mobile phone. Only with the difference that an electronic device charges in an hour, while the human body needs seven to eight hours a day to be fully charged. The more we sleep, the more productive our days will be. Many people believe that lost hours of sleep can be made up with a cup of coffee, but that’s not the case. You will be full of energy for a while, but this feeling quickly disappears and you will feel even worse! The need for sleep of course changes with age.
- Newborn (0-3 months): 14-17 hours
- Toddler (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
- School-aged child (6-13 years): 9-11 hours
- Adult (18-65+ years): 7-9 hours

Be aware of your sleeping conditions. The bed should be comfortable, the light turned off and the air fresh. The ideal temperature is also important.
