A significant portion of the population experiences bloating at least sometimes. People often have that feeling after a heavy meal. However, some feel bloated constantly. Closely related to this are a person’s lifestyle and the composition of their diet. All of this means one thing: there are often things you can do about bloating. Let’s find out together what!
Sugars play a role
Bloating can be effectively addressed with a low-carbohydrate diet. Bloating most often occurs as a result of excessive consumption and improper digestion of carbohydrates. You should therefore, to some extent, avoid starches, sugar and alcohol. You should also replace unhealthy sweets with natural sugars found in fruit, honey, etc. If you like sweets, it’s better to switch to healthy sugars (for example dried dates and apricots) than to stuff yourself with processed sugars. Carbohydrates are also very important for the body, but it depends on the form!
Insufficient hydration
Lack of water intake disrupts our digestive system and in the long term causes various health problems. Dehydration is caused mainly by excessive consumption of coffee, alcohol and sugar. Normally you should drink 6–8 glasses of water a day. If you often drink coffee or black tea, then ideally twice that. If you do not drink enough water, the body tends to retain the remaining water, and that is one of the main causes of a bloated stomach.
Stress
All of the above causes of bloating are often also linked to stress. When we are „on edge“, we forget proper eating and drinking habits. That never bodes well for the body. All studies of the last decade show that the level of stress is closely related to digestive function. When you are stressed, food is not properly digested. This can in turn cause abdominal pain and a feeling of bloating. Of course, eating quickly while standing or walking also negatively affects our digestion. Every small child knows very well that food should be eaten slowly and thoroughly chewed. But who among us really does that?
