Perennials are plants that appear in our gardens every year without us having to replace them. Perhaps you are looking for inspiration on which perennials to plant in the garden to create an oasis of harmony. Either way, we have inspiration for you with several perennials that will shine in both large and small gardens.
Japanese anemone
So let’s start with the Japanese anemone. It is a beautiful plant with long, narrow stems that bear graceful white flowers with a yellow center. This flower color is seen most often, however it can also be purchased in red. The anemone blooms at the end of August and prefers rich humus soil and a shady spot.
Gelenium
A beautiful and also the most well-known perennial, which blooms most often but also the longest. Many varieties of this plant bloom from the end of June to the end of October. They love sunlight and some of them can even be put in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Water perennials regularly; they are very undemanding. Their advantage is that they emit essential oils that repel slugs and snails, so your other plants and vegetables can be protected.
Shrubby cinquefoil
Shrubby cinquefoil is a beautiful and low-spreading shrub that is adorned with graceful, smooth flowers. It blooms in partial shade, but unfortunately only from May until the end of June. In autumn, however, its leaves transform into an amazing display that will catch every eye.
Poppy
Who would think of planting poppies in their garden when they grow around the fields? It may not seem so to you, but poppies clustered together create a beautiful area with bright red, white, or pink flowers. There are poppy varieties that bloom in May and June, but there are also late varieties that bloom in June and July. They love light and soil with a high lime content.
Bleeding heart
A plant that tolerates sun but requires a shady spot. Give it frequent watering and nutrient-rich soil. The bleeding heart, as the name suggests, has beautiful heart-shaped flowers and also shaggy and fairly large leaves.
Four o’clock (Mirabilis jalapa)
Its flowers are cheerful, looking like small chalices that attract butterflies. The flowers always open at noon and remain open until late evening.
Echinacea
Echinacea blooms fairly early and is adorned with beautiful purple-pink flowers with a raised, spiky center. It can be tied into a bouquet, but it also attracts butterflies. Moreover, it is a medicinal herb that supports the immune system.
Devil’s eye
It is nicknamed the devil’s eye, yet it is a beautiful red plant. It can be grown both in pots and in the garden. Around the devil’s eye we recommend planting several lower, lighter-colored plants so the whole will stand out beautifully.
