With the arrival of spring, ticks begin to appear everywhere and we all wonder how we will defend ourselves against them this year. Ticks are already active now, but they will be most active at the turn of spring and summer. An increased occurrence of ticks is expected, as usual, in forests and tall grasses. Ticks pose many fairly high risks to us, and therefore we should constantly look for ways to protect ourselves from ticks. If you really want peace from ticks, read this article to the end and follow its advice.
The importance of prevention
We all know well that a tick is so small that it can be very difficult to find. However, if it bites and begins to feed on our blood, it can cause many ticks to jeopardize human life. Many ticks cause serious illnesses, starting with Lyme disease, continuing with tick-borne encephalitis and ending with meningitis. Unfortunately, we are still in a time when ticks claim a fairly high number of human lives every year. Although ticks are very small and look harmless, they are very insidious and we should constantly look for ways to get rid of them.
Essential oils
If you are among lovers of natural products and enjoy natural scents, it will certainly be pleasant for you to defend yourself against ticks with natural essential oils. Ticks are creatures with a sensitive sense of smell, and thanks to this finding we know that we can fight them very well using strong natural fragrances. So if you have cloves at home, make a strong decoction from them. Then simply place this decoction in a mechanical sprayer and spray your clothes with it before each outing into nature. Thanks to the clove decoction you will repel ticks from afar.
It is very good to support the clove oil with one of the essential oils. So if you enjoy the scent of eucalyptus, definitely do not hesitate to use it. You can apply eucalyptus oil to the skin by itself, or in combination with schizandra oil. Both of these oils are very suitable for repelling any insects. This oil is fairly specific and not everyone may have it at home, but that’s okay. If you don’t have it, mint with lavender combined with eucalyptus will serve you very well.
How to dress for the outdoors
If you are heading into nature and know that you should protect yourself from ticks, it is not enough to just use various repellent products; it is also very important to protect yourself by choosing the right clothing. You should dress so as to make it as difficult as possible for ticks to reach your skin, while also making sure you don’t overheat on warm days. Ticks prefer to bite in places where the skin is the softest, and thanks to this information we know which areas of the body we should watch most closely. That means you should especially protect the areas behind the knees, in the groin, under the armpits, on the neck, behind the ears and also on the head. It is within your power to protect all these places with appropriate clothing.
When going into nature, especially wear closed shoes, even when it’s hot outside. If possible, wear high socks that are sufficiently wide. They should be wide enough to tuck your trousers into them. This will completely prevent ticks from getting onto your legs. Cover your head with any headwear. You can use summer caps, baseball caps or traditional straw hats. If you are going to rest in nature, definitely do not sit in places with high air humidity. Instead choose dry spots, ideally with pine trees overhead and short grass, where ticks are much less fond of staying.
