The role of the thyroid gland for our overall health is undeniable. This relatively small, butterfly-shaped organ is located on the neck in the throat area near the Adam’s apple.
The thyroid gland’s task is to stimulate metabolism through the hormones it produces, to maintain calcium levels and a number of other bodily processes.
Unfortunately, many of us ignore the condition of our thyroid until a health problem appears. An imbalance in thyroid hormone levels causes numerous adverse effects on the body.
Essential oils and their influence on the thyroid gland
Essential oils are extremely beneficial substances for regulating the thyroid gland. In the body they act through the same mechanisms as thyroid hormones.
The oils mentioned support several bodily functions, organs and other endocrine glands.
Now let’s look at the most beneficial essential oils for your thyroid gland.
1. Clove essential oil (Eugenia caryophylli). It is a product of steam distillation of cloves, usually originating from Madagascar. It is very beneficial for the thyroid gland.
2. Basil essential oil (Ocimum basilicum). It is produced by steam distillation of basil leaves. Studies have shown that it supports the function of the thyroid gland, the pineal gland, the adrenals and the pituitary.
3. Lemongrass essential oil. It is also obtained by steam distillation. Lemongrass comes from India and is very effective for thyroid problems, especially when combined with clove essential oil.
4. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) essential oil. Geranium, or rose geranium oil, is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. The plant originates from China.
5. Rosemary essential oil (Rosmarinus officinalis). It is again obtained by steam distillation from a plant originating from Morocco. It strengthens the function of the thyroid gland and the brain.
6. Myrrh essential oil (Commiphora myrrha). It is obtained by steam distillation of myrrh resin.
It strengthens the immune system and improves thyroid health.
7. White sandalwood essential oil (Santalum album). It is produced by distilling the wood of this Indian tree. It is another way to improve not only thyroid function but also the pineal gland, the hypothalamus and the pituitary.
How to use essential oils to support the thyroid gland
Here we present several ways to use the oils mentioned so that you can support and regulate thyroid hormone production and improve its functioning.
1. Every day immediately after waking, apply 1 drop of basil essential oil diluted in a little carrier oil (sunflower, olive, etc.) to the back in the area where the kidneys are located.
2. Each morning apply one drop of an essential oil from the other oils listed, diluted in a little carrier oil, to the thyroid area.
3. Prepare a blend to apply to your soles. Make it by mixing 20 drops each of basil, myrrh, frankincense and lemongrass essential oils and 1 to 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Store the blend in a sealable glass container.
A few final tips
You can also use essential oils as part of aromatherapy.
Drop 5 to 10 drops into an essential oil diffuser. You can also apply a mixture of essential and carrier oil to your clothes, into your palm, or inhale directly from the bottle.
When applying to the skin always dilute the oil with another carrier oil because essential oils are extremely concentrated. Then apply them around the relevant gland or to the appropriate reflex points located on the soles.
