The State Agricultural and Food Inspection found a counterfeit kabanos of Polish production under the chain’s private label in Lidl. It did not contain even one percent meat.
“Although of the 158 grams of raw material eight grams were beef, in reality there was not even one percent, which corresponds to 1.58 grams,” the inspection spokesman Pavel Kopřiva said in a press release. The information on the packaging of this product lied to consumers about the actual composition.
It was a product called Pikok kabanosy with a weight of 175 grams and a best-before date of February 12, 2019. According to the information on the packaging, 150 grams of pork and eight grams of beef were supposed to be used per 100 grams of the final product. “The information on the packaging thus lied to consumers regarding the actual composition of the food,” Kopřiva said.
The inspection ordered the retailer to withdraw the batch from sale and began administrative proceedings to impose a fine. “We received this information about the product Pikok kabanosy on Thursday, it is a product with a best-before date of 12. 2. 2019 and at this time it is no longer on sale. We will deal with the case immediately directly with the supplier and will certainly draw consequences,” Lidl spokeswoman Zuzana Holá said in a statement.
The inspection also recorded similar problems with other meat products of private labels in various chains; most were produced in Poland.
