The dishes of the most famous chefs cannot be compared to the culinary creations of grandmothers, after which one licks not only the plates but also the fingers. Many people share the same opinion. For example, the Italian Jody Scaravella.

Grandmother in the restaurant

He missed his grandmother so much (Nonna in Italian – “grandmother”) that he currently employs as many as 6 elderly women in the restaurant! When Jody was little, his grandmother took care of the household – she was a kind of source of Italian traditions and recipes.

In her memory, 13 years ago, he opened a restaurant in New York called Enoteca Maria. In this way he wanted to introduce the public to traditional Italian cuisine, which is characterized by simplicity. These are classic dishes that women used to feed their families.

First employed grandmothers

It started with placing an ad in the local newspapers: “We are looking for Italian grandmothers who know regional cuisine”.

Over time, however, news about his business spread throughout the neighborhood and the women began to come on their own.

As a result, he found 7 older and experienced housewives from various regions of Italy.
Each of them takes turns during the week preparing excellent dishes.
Since this idea was a huge success, the restaurant owner soon began to think about expanding the menu and invites grandmothers from all regions of the world.

International restaurant

Enoteca Maria thus became an international restaurant: besides Italian cooks, you can currently find grandmothers from Argentina, Algeria, Russia, Syria, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Liberia, Nigeria there.
The team is also completed by a male representative – grandfather Giuseppe, whose task is cooking various types of pasta.
