Geraniums are among the most popular balcony plants that can enliven any exterior with their beauty. Occasionally, however, it happens that despite all care geraniums do not bloom, or after some time they stop blooming. Fortunately, there is a simple trick that will help kickstart flowering and get your geraniums to shine with full blooms again. This trick was revealed to us by our reader Mrs. Eliška and to perform it you will only need an ordinary pin!
How to make geraniums bloom using a pin?
If you are disappointed that your geraniums are not blooming, or flowering has stopped, try the following simple procedure. It involves stimulating the plant with a gentle prick into the stem, which can significantly promote the formation of new flowers.
We need:
- A pin, needle or safety pin
- A little alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for disinfection
Procedure:

Disinfect the pin or needle:
Before you start, disinfect the pin or needle with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to prevent introducing infection into the plant. -
Pierce the stem:
Choose the thickest part of the geranium’s stem and carefully pierce it through and through. Each stem should have at least 2–3 punctures, with one plant possibly having up to 10 punctures. Don’t be afraid, this procedure will not harm the plant. -
Repeat on other stems:
Make punctures on the other thicker stems of the plant as well.
What happens after the puncture?
After this simple stimulation the plant will start to respond quickly. Piercing the stem stimulates the geranium to regenerate and supports the formation of new flower buds. Within a short time your geraniums will begin to bloom again and develop beautiful flowers that will adorn your garden or balcony.
