Among summer fruit, the watermelon is a very popular choice, which is also in many respects beneficial for the human body. Although watermelon is available year-round, its consumption increases several times in the summer. This phenomenon is caused mainly by its beneficial effects on the human body at high temperatures, as it helps to hydrate in a very simple way. Due to its high water content, however, you should not eat watermelon at night – the ideal time for its consumption is lunch or the early afternoon hours.

Positive effects of consuming watermelon on the human body

Eating watermelon brings several benefits to the human body, which include primarily:

  • refreshment and hydration
  • cleansing of the kidneys
  • support for eyesight
  • prevention of cardiovascular diseases

Refreshment and hydration

Thanks to its high water content, you will appreciate watermelon especially in summer. Especially if you chill the fruit, it will help you get through tropical days. A larger amount of watermelon will perfectly hydrate you and also help prevent possible heatstroke.

Cleansing of the kidneys

The watery flesh of this fruit, together with its high potassium content, is also beneficial for the kidneys. Through its appropriate composition, watermelon allows toxins to be flushed from the kidneys and cleanses them overall.

Support for eyesight

In addition to potassium, watermelon also contains a high proportion of lutein, beta-carotene and vitamin C. All of these substances are necessary for the long-term preservation of sharp vision.

Prevention of cardiovascular diseases

Besides the aforementioned substances, watermelon also contains antioxidants and magnesium. These, together with potassium and vitamins, help break down cholesterol from the blood and maintain blood pressure at the needed level.

Why not to eat watermelon at night

Given its favorable effect on the body, you should enjoy watermelon often, however it is not appropriate to eat it right before sleeping, and that is because:

  • it is relatively heavy and expands the stomach, so you will feel full for a long time
  • due to reduced activity during the night the body does not use the sugar that watermelon contains and tends to store it
  • the high water content represents a burden for the body at night and acts as a diuretic
