Fighting toilet odor is definitely not easy and many of us struggle with it every day. The toilet is one of the rooms that require special care and maintenance. Moisture, mold and urine smells are unpleasant, annoying and not easy to eliminate. Today we will therefore look at tips and tricks that will allow you to say goodbye to unpleasant odors that bother your home and everyday life. Instead, you can look forward to a fresh and pleasant scent in your toilet.

The smell of urine comes from the natural breakdown caused by bacteria and uric acid crystals. Once they get onto a porous and wet surface (toilet, rugs or clothing), ammonia is activated, which you can then smell in the air. Overcoming this nuisance is not easy, but there are many great, simple and very cheap ways to get rid of the unpleasant urine smell. Always act as soon as possible, because you definitely don’t want your guests to have to deal with it.

Baking soda or white vinegar

Baking soda is a great aid for neutralizing odors. For fans of eco-friendly cleaning this product is nothing new, because you can use it on practically any cleaning task in the home. In this case, simply pour baking soda into the toilet bowl and scrub with a coarse sponge to remove the bacteria that cause unpleasant odors. If you want to boost the effect, also pour a little into a glass or small dish and add a few drops of lavender oil. Put the container on a shelf and you will see how fresh your toilet will smell.

White vinegar has very similar effects to baking soda. It is a disinfectant, descaler and antibacterial agent that is part of natural deodorizers. Used together with baking soda you will also clean the pipes and disinfect all surfaces, including the toilet. Simply pour vinegar directly into the bowl and let it work (ideally overnight). The next day scrub the bowl with a toilet brush, which will remove dirt and stubborn odors. The toilet will be beautifully clean and the smell will disappear.

Proper cleaning and adequate ventilation

The smell in your toilet can be caused by many things. In this regard you need to focus on proper cleaning technique. Many people rely only on the bowl itself, but forget the rims, the whole seat and the underside of the toilet. Mold can also appear in small corners, which can cause not only odor but also health problems. It is therefore important to thoroughly and regularly clean the entire area where your toilet is located. Unfortunately many people forget this and then wonder why they have such problems with unpleasant odors.

Regular and adequate ventilation is also important. If you have a window in the toilet, it is necessary to open it after each visit to air out the space. Otherwise you can leave the door open for at least 15 minutes to ensure a renewal of fresh air in the room. A classic fan is also a great solution for small windowless spaces, as it will cool the area and at the same time remove excess moisture. Believe that even in a panel apartment bathroom you can have a perfectly clean bathroom and a toilet free of mold.

Special perfumes or tablets

After cleaning and disinfecting you can use perfumes with essential oils to scent the toilet. The most popular are lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree or rosemary. It only depends on your taste and preferred scent. You can use oils in two ways: spray or diffuser. You can make a spray from a tablespoon of 70°C alcohol and 10 drops of essential oil of your choice. In a diffuser it is even easier. Just add a few drops to the water and let it run for a while.

Another option is to make tablets that will remove unpleasant odors. Simply mix 1 cup of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of essential oil of your choice and 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. Mix everything and form tablets, which you let rest for 24 hours. The next day you can drop a few tablets into the bowl and flush. This will free the pipes and at the same time disperse a pleasant scent that you like the most. Your local shop surely has a great selection of essential oils to choose from.

Scented candles or matches

Neither of these will surprise you, as they are commonly used methods. Scented candles are a great option if you are at home and have them under control. They add a cozy atmosphere to your toilet and you also get a sweet and very nice scent. When choosing, however, avoid buying candles that contain paraffin. That is certainly not good for your health. Natural wax may be a bit more expensive, but it will not pose any danger to your health.

You may have wondered why people recommend lighting matches in the toilet. Our grandmothers swore by this method. It works paradoxically because the sulfur from lit matches removes the odor. If you are a fan of this traditional method, be sure to leave a box of matches in the toilet. It can be very useful. If you have small children, think about their and your safety and put the box out of their reach.

Try decorative potpourri

Fragrant dried flowers may at first glance look like just a nice decoration, but they can help you a lot in fighting unwanted smells in the toilet. You can buy them in a decoration shop, but also make them yourself from flowers. If you have your own garden, you certainly have many opportunities and beautiful flowers from which you can make this practical decoration. You can enhance their effect with a few drops of essential oil or place the potpourri near a heat source.
