Every winter we struggle with window panes fogging up. You may think it only prevents the view, but in reality, over the long term it can lead to mold formation. And if the windows or doors are made of wood, they can even be destroyed. Therefore it is necessary to prevent it.

Which preventive measures can help us avoid mold

Of course the best solution is to properly insulate the windows, but not everyone can afford that. In that case I recommend ventilating often. Without realizing it, we make the apartment incredibly damp by showering every day. Especially during the winter months, when we spend much more time in it and shower with hot water. Of course I’m not saying anyone should limit themselves because of the steam, you just need to be a bit more sensible. If you shower daily, definitely open a window afterwards. Most of us think that opening the door to the rest of the apartment is enough, but that actually lets the moisture into other rooms as well. It’s true that the air outside is colder in winter and none of us want to be cold at home, but if you don’t do this, you risk serious problems with mold on the walls and window sills. Another activity that creates steam is cooking. Fortunately, to reduce humidity while cooking it’s enough to use a lid and handle the flame a bit more carefully, for example when the water is approaching boiling, lower the flame or turn it off entirely.

The simplest and most effective trick

You can use a certain trick to prevent windows from fogging. And you will only need three things for it.

  • cloth
  • shaving foam
  • <li/towel/toilet paper

Simply rub the window lightly with shaving foam and spread it a little with a cloth. Wipe everything thoroughly with a cloth and you’ll be set for a full two weeks! Repeat this process from time to time. Above all, do not use water for this. The foam would then take on a bad consistency and the whole thing would be useless. Try the trick at home and you’ll see that you no longer need to worry about windows fogging up.
