The stapler is used in the office by most of us and many of us were already familiar with it as children when creating various projects or lovely items for parents or friends. The stapler is generally used across fields, in offices and in households. But nobody really knows it. The name “stapler” can actually refer to a fairly wide range of different products.

A bit of history

Did you even know that the origin of the first stapler has a really long history? Long ago, papers were stitched together with a needle and thread or glued with wax to keep them together. People gradually tried to free themselves from this demanding method and looked for new ways. The first real stapler only appeared in 1866, and it could take only a single staple that pierced the paper, but it still had to be closed manually.

The stapler is everywhere

The true stapler came into being in 1937. It was the invention of paper merchant Jack Linsky, whose Swingline Speed Stapler no. 3 enjoyed unprecedented success and quickly spread around the world. The stapler ultimately found use in many professions, whether in furniture making, construction, or painting. Today almost everyone has one in a drawer, but has no idea about this long history. This is true of many things we have in our drawers at home, whose histories are truly fascinating.

There isn’t just one stapler

There are many types of staplers, not only because they are used in different fields and each would need to be adapted for a given trade. That is true, and therefore a stapler for carpenters or upholsterers will differ from a surgical stapler. However, even in an office you may find not only a manual stapler but also an electric one, and each can be classified into a different category depending on how many sheets of paper it can join. But staplers have one thing in common – they join materials together.
