Most school canteens in the Czech Republic have managed to modernize their kitchens. Thanks to that, pupils and students have a wider choice of meals and tastier food. Sauces and sweet lunches still predominate among children. The range of food and its quality have expanded. Because of this, school canteens can offer more dishes from which pupils and students can choose, and the meals are more flavorful. This is helped, not least, by more modern kitchens with modern appliances and utensils. Most pupils attend school canteens; besides them, teachers and other school staff also eat in the canteens.

Modern dishes in school canteens

School canteens nowadays try to include modern dishes and ingredients on the menu, but classic meals usually prevail among pupils and students. The best option, of course, is when a school canteen has the ability to cook multiple dishes and pupils and students can choose. This is more demanding for the canteen’s operation and the cooks, but it prevents situations where a pupil would go to after-school care without lunch because they dislike something. When each of them can choose what to have, at least something is always eaten. This also reduces leftovers, but above all it means that with a choice of food every pupil finds something to eat and there are no problems with a pupil not eating at school.

A choice of several options can, however, also be harmful

Previously it was customary that canteens offered pupils only one dish. Now that is rather a thing of the past, although we would still find such school canteens. Today it is more a thing of the past. Most canteens already offer a choice of several dishes. Most school canteens offer a choice of two to three dishes, but we also find a few schools that have a choice of several more dishes.

We have already clarified above the advantages of being able to choose from several meals. But it also has one disadvantage. Pupils who have the option to choose what food they have for lunch naturally choose according to their taste, and not according to what is healthier for them and what foods their body needs. Everything has its pros and cons. In addition, for pupils to be able to choose what they have for lunch, schools must have the space, staff, and sufficient equipment.
