If you feel, especially at night, that you cannot sleep, your legs itch and you don’t know how to lie down at night without feeling them, you may have restless legs syndrome. It is a condition in which the position of your legs will be uncomfortable, particularly because they cause uncontrolled movement.
It can occur at any age
This syndrome can appear at any time, it worsens with age and also if you do not try to prevent it or at least relieve the symptoms.
The cause of restless legs syndrome is a lack of dopamine in the brain, which is responsible for controlling muscle movement. The main symptom you may notice is an urge to move your legs, even when you are sitting still in the office or at home with a coffee.
It is most noticeable during sleep or in the evening, when you already want to rest after a hard day. If this syndrome affects you, it is good to stretch your legs. It also primarily affects only the legs; it may rarely occur in the arms or other parts of the body.
You can make a change if you change your lifestyle
Of course, a poorer lifestyle influences this condition, meaning frequent alcohol consumption, smoking or unhealthy eating habits. You may also have an iron deficiency in your blood, which can be followed by kidney failure or back pain. In this case it is already necessary to visit a doctor.
To prevent the syndrome, it will therefore be necessary to:
- Eat healthily, without sugars and harmful fats
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Reduce smoking and avoid places where there is smoke
Varicose veins can also cause restless legs syndrome. They appear mainly on the feet and legs. They are generally not treated, but if they cause further complications, it is necessary to see a doctor. Some people may not even like the sight of varicose veins, so they try to remove them for cosmetic reasons. There are several ways to remove varicose veins. Causes of varicose veins can be, for example, age, long-term standing, menopause or pregnancy. In addition, they affect women more often than men.
