Surely you have already found yourself in a situation where you urgently needed to go to the toilet, but at that moment you did not have the opportunity to step away. Maybe there was no toilet nearby or it was not appropriate to leave. You were therefore forced to grit your teeth, hold your urine and wait for a more suitable moment when you could relieve yourself. It is understandable that in some situations it simply cannot be helped, but believe me, if you regularly and for a long time suppress the urge to urinate, it can lead to very unpleasant health problems.

Exceeding half a liter of urine is risky

According to urology experts, the average adult can hold up to 0.5 liters of fluid in the body without having to go to the toilet. But once the amount exceeds half a liter, we begin to feel that our body is signaling the need to empty. At such a moment we already look for the nearest toilet. In cases when it is not possible to step away, we have no choice but to contract the muscles and hold the urine until a suitable opportunity to go to the bathroom arises. However, if we find ourselves in such a situation often, there is a risk that we will develop:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Rupture of the urinary bladder
  • Kidney stones
  • Uncontrollable urine leakage

Urinary tract infections

One of the major nuisances can be the development of a urinary tract infection. It is characterized primarily by stinging and burning, and in some cases by severe pain. Moreover, you feel like you constantly need to go to the toilet, which can complicate your everyday life. Infection occurs when an excessive number of bacteria accumulate in the urinary bladder. At such a time it is definitely necessary not to postpone a visit to the doctor.

Rupture of the urinary bladder

Long-term retention of urine can also cause a rupture of the urinary bladder, which can have fatal consequences. You will not avoid surgical intervention and it is certain that you will end up in the operating room.

Kidney stones

Kidney stones are another consequence of long-term urine retention. Drink enough clean water daily and try to go to the toilet as soon as it is at all possible.

Uncontrollable urine leakage

Over time, during the natural aging process, the urinary bladder loses its elasticity and tightness. In the case where we retain urine until it is no longer possible, our bladder begins to behave like a balloon filled with fluid. The more it expands, the more difficult it is to contract back to its original form. This is then associated with uncontrollable urine leakage, because the bladder is no longer able to contract back and hold the urine.
