Ingredients

Preparation procedure

  • Peel the potatoes, wash them and slice them into thin slices (about 3 mm) so they cook evenly and absorb the sauce.
  • Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and briefly sauté until fragrant; the garlic must not brown.
  • Pour the cream and milk into the pan. Season with salt and pepper and add a pinch of nutmeg. Let simmer gently over low heat for a few minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  • Add the sliced potatoes to the sauce and gently stir so they are all coated. Cook for 15–20 minutes over low heat until the potatoes are tender but not falling apart.
  • Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish, sprinkle with grated cheese and place in the oven. Bake about 15 minutes until a golden crust forms on the surface.
  • After removing, let stand for a few minutes. Before serving, sprinkle with fresh parsley or chives.

Tips for better results

  • Potatoes: Choose firmer, waxy varieties that hold their shape.

  • Herbs: Add thyme or rosemary for a more aromatic flavor.

  • More cheeses: A combination of two types of cheese will add depth to the sauce.

  • Lighter version: You can replace part of the cream with evaporated milk and reduce the butter.
