Preparation procedure

  • In a bowl, mix the warm milk and water. Add the sugar and dry yeast, stir well and let stand for about 2-3 minutes to allow the yeast to start working actively.
  • Add the oil, flour and salt to the mixture. Work into a soft and pliable dough, knead it well. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.
  • Once the dough has risen, gently mix it and divide it into two equal parts. Shape each part into a ball.
  • Roll the first dough ball into a 45 cm square. Brush it with melted butter, then fold it into thirds to obtain a strip about 15 cm wide. Fold this strip into thirds again to form a compact square of 15 cm. Do the same with the other half of the dough. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  • Now roll out both parts of the dough again, brush with butter and sprinkle with grated cheddar. Roll up the dough and seal the seam by pinching it closed so the pastry doesn't come apart.
  • Cut the roll into pieces about 7 cm long and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Press them lightly.
  • In a bowl, mix the egg yolk with the milk and brush the rolls with this mixture. Finally, sprinkle them with blue poppy seeds.
  • Let the rolls rise for a short while and then bake them in a preheated oven at 180°C for about 30 minutes, until they are nicely golden.
