If the need to save a few crowns is added to this problem, it’s a tricky situation. But every good housewife can manage. We have a cheap and tasty recipe for you that will surely please the sweet tooths of your children who love sweets. Surprise them with an excellent sweet lunch that will also keep them full for a long time.

Rice casserole, fruit dumplings and bread pudding

These are the most common sweet dishes we enjoy at home or in restaurants. But if you have them every other Monday, you tend to lose your appetite for them. You need something to break the monotony of repeating lunches. How about potato gnocchi in sugar with jam?

You will need:

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 35 dkg of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 1 egg
  • a pinch of salt

Cook the potatoes in their skins and let them cool. Peel and mash them, chop or grate finely. Then mix with the flour, sugar, egg, a pinch of salt and the oil. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and pliable. Roll into thin logs and cut into pieces about 4–5 cm long. Cook in boiling salted water until the dumplings float to the surface. Drain and gently toss so they don’t stick together and sprinkle with sugar. Serve with jam, preferably a good homemade one. You can also flavor them with poppy seeds, various types of ground nuts or honey.

The advantage of this recipe is its versatility. You can also enjoy these potato dumplings in a savory version. Fry some onions in lard and add streaky (English) bacon. You can throw in various kinds of vegetables or mushrooms. Finish by sprinkling with grated cheese. Your taste buds will thank you.
