Tens of thousands of Czechs suffer from severe headaches that are accompanied by sensitivity to light, nausea, throbbing pain, and tension in the neck and back.

Most often they use over-the-counter medications like Aspirin or Excedrin against this pain. But these cannot provide relief or may cause other side effects.

Therefore it is always better to use other, healthier alternatives to suppress a headache. We will discuss which ones in the following part of the article.

Natural remedies for migraines

#1 Caffeine

Caffeine reduces pain, so it is often an ingredient in medicines. In particular, it reduces the inflammation that causes a migraine. Moreover, when combined with over-the-counter headache medicines, pain relief is even faster because it is 40 percent more effective.

However, keep in mind that you should always be careful not to become dependent on it, as its absence could paradoxically also cause headaches.

#2 Ginger

A study conducted in 2014 found that powdered ginger root has a comparable benefit to other medicinal preparations for treating migraines and has no side effects.

#3 Banana and ice compress

The Mayo Clinic states that applying a cold compress to the head and neck alleviates a migraine. You can also place a banana peel on your forehead, which helps absorb potassium, thereby making your headache disappear.

#4 Feverfew

Using feverfew, either as a supplement, tea, or extract, prevents migraines and treats them.

#5 Flaxseed

Recurring migraines are often the result of inflammation, which can be treated by increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Since ground flaxseed and flaxseed oil are rich in omega-3, you can try adding them to soups or salads or use flaxseed oil as a dressing.

#6 Lavender oil

Boil 6 cups of water and then add 8 drops of lavender. Inhaling this calming steam relieves tension during headaches. In addition, you can also massage your temples with a few drops of lavender oil.

#7 Elecampane

To treat a migraine, take 50 to 75 milligrams of elecampane in pill form twice daily, because the extract of this herb stimulates blood circulation to the brain.

#8 Basil oil

Basil oil is a strong natural muscle relaxant that calms headaches resulting from muscle pain and tension. In cooking, you can replace olive oil with this to relax muscles and reduce headaches.

#9 Buckwheat

It is a rich source of rutin, a flavonoid that has been shown to suppress inflammation, the main cause of migraine headaches. Therefore make sure to incorporate it into your daily diet.

Conclusion

Despite these natural remedies, make sure you also make certain changes to your lifestyle, which should help you address the headache problem.
You can adjust your diet or try yoga, meditation, exercise and walks in nature. All these activities will help manage stress, provide the necessary nutrients for the body, and suppress migraine.

If your migraines are very intense, you can also try acupuncture treatment. However, before you resort to medications that are available without a prescription, make sure that you have tried to help yourself.
