Peking cabbage is a healthy, crunchy vegetable that we should all enjoy. It is packed with nutrients and is essential for the brain and for pregnant women. Today we will prepare Peking cabbage in the “birds” style, which will be baked in the oven. Don’t look for any complications in the recipe — even a beginning cook can manage it.
What you’ll need
- Peking cabbage — 1 head
- minced meat — beef 400 grams
- raisins 50 grams
- 1 egg
- oil, garlic, salt, pepper and other herbs — marjoram
Preparation method
The best choice is beef. It has a strong flavor and goes well with the cabbage. If you don’t want beef, you can buy pork. However, we do not recommend turkey or chicken mince. It is bland and, combined with the cabbage and spices, the meat will not be particularly flavorful. Prepare the cabbage. Tear off several whole leaves from the head and wash them under running water. Then place them on the sink or on a flat tray and pour boiling water over them. Thanks to this preparation, the leaves will become soft and you will be able to roll them.
Step two
Prepare a bowl and place into it the meat with the egg, raisins, spices and salt. If you wish, you can also finely dice an onion into the meat. Mix the meat thoroughly and let it rest for at least fifteen minutes. After the time has passed, preheat the oven and prepare the cabbage.
Step three
Now form small ovals from the minced meat, which you place on the edge of the Peking cabbage leaf. Once placed, grab the end, fold it over the meat, and then roll. Repeat this process with each cabbage leaf and the prepared meat. Then place the rolls on a baking tray and lightly drizzle them with olive oil. The meat will tighten and juices and fat will flow out, thanks to which the cabbage will braise nicely. Bake at 170 degrees for approximately forty minutes. You can serve the “birds” with mashed potatoes or roasted potatoes. You can also make a creamy mustard sauce and American-style potatoes. Enjoy your meal.
