Onion is not only healthy, but also very useful. Our grandmothers used onion skins to color Easter eggs, and its coloring abilities are useful elsewhere too. Did you know, for example, that if you add sliced onion to chicken breasts while cooking, you’ll achieve that pink shade of meat like in advertisements? Onion skins can also be added to soup – not only do they give it an interesting flavor, they also color it beautifully.
Onion in cosmetics
Onion is also useful in cosmetics. Prepare a simple facial mask that will rid you of oily skin, smooth out fine wrinkles and soften the skin. What will you need?
- Finely chopped onion
- A teaspoon of honey
- A teaspoon of olive oil
Mix all the ingredients until you obtain a consistency that spreads well. Leave it on for about 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Onion juice is also good for hair. It removes dandruff, adds volume to hair, prevents hair loss and promotes growth. You can rinse your hair with the juice after using shampoo.
Likewise, you can use onion if you need to remove yellow sweat stains from clothing. Simply apply onion juice to the affected area, let it act briefly and wash in the usual way. You can also scrub cookware with onion slices, thereby removing burnt-on residue and odors. Rinse the cleaned cookware with water and soap afterwards.
Against insects and colds
And if you want to enjoy a quiet summer evening outdoors without being bothered by mosquitoes or other insects, there’s nothing easier than slicing an onion and placing it in a container with water. It reliably repels insects. If an insect has already bitten you, rub the spot with a slice of onion. It has antibacterial properties and soothes irritation.
And how to use onion for a cold? Drink an infusion; it will relieve a sore throat. If the taste is too strong for you or your children, mix the infusion with honey. The medicinal properties of onion are well known, but many people avoid it because they fear an unpleasant smell. That isn’t necessary, though — onion or garlic breath can be easily removed by eating nuts, especially almonds.
