It is known as the King of Oils – and this title is truly deserved. I use it every day to strengthen my health and if I had to choose to use only one oil, it would be this one.
In the past it was long considered an expensive and very rare essential oil. Historically, its use is documented among the Babylonians, Assyrians and Egyptians in religious ceremonies.
It was also used as an ointment or in embalming instead of resin. And of course, the three kings brought it as a gift to the newborn Jesus Christ.
What is frankincense oil (Frankincense oil)
Frankincense oil is obtained from the Indian frankincense tree (Boswellia serrata) as an extract from the tree’s bark.
The milky sap quickly hardens into resin which is then scraped from the tree in pear-shaped droplets.
The color and quality of the resin can vary greatly, from the highest quality (clear and silvery) to the lowest quality (brownish-yellow shade).
The essential (etheric) oil Frankincense, which today is obtained from the resin by steam distillation, has wide uses and excellent healing effects.
Health effects of frankincense oil
The following uses of frankincense oil are based on my personal experiences:
1. Helps in healing cuts, scrapes and burns.
For an even better effect, first use lavender essential oil, then apply a layer of Frankincense oil over it.
When treating wounds, the combination of these two oils is excellent.
2. Supports the nervous system.
Frankincense is probably the best oil I know that supports the nervous system. It particularly helps the central nervous system in function.
The active substances in frankincense oil, boswellic acids, help us achieve a clear mind and emotional balance.
3. Reduces and smooths scars.
Simply combine 2-3 drops of Frankincense oil with coconut oil, then apply directly to the skin.
4. Strengthens the immune system.
To boost your immunity, massage a few drops into the skin on the bottom of your foot daily, especially at the tip.
It is also very effective to sprinkle the oil around the whole house and bedroom before sleeping.
5. Reduces stress and feelings of anxiety.
Frankincense oil helps with relaxation and induces feelings of calm.
When you feel stressed, simply mix a few drops of Frankincense oil with a massage oil and rub it on the back of your neck.
6. Hormones and memory.
This oil can help balance hormones or improve memory.
7. Aging skin.
Mix a few drops of frankincense oil with an unscented oil (e.g., coconut) and apply it to the skin.
You can also add a drop of Frankincense oil to your daily moisturizer.
8. Headaches.
This oil can also be used if tension or headaches appear.
9. Constipation.
Add six drops of oil to a large pot or bowl of hot water, bend over the pot and cover your head and the pot with a towel so you can trap the steam.
Inhale the vapors for at least five minutes, adding more hot water if necessary. Be careful not to scald yourself; the water should be hot, not boiling.
10. Relieves itching.
Applying a single drop to an irritated area provides immediate relief.
11. Relieves joint pain and reduces swelling.
Mix frankincense oil with a massage oil, and apply to sore joints before bed and during the day.
12. Cleanses problematic skin.
Apply one drop to problematic areas morning and evening.
13. Relaxation. Add 5 to 6 drops of oil to a humidifier and inhale.
This practice creates a calm atmosphere in which our senses open. To improve mood it also helps to use a few drops as a perfume.
14. Removes lumps, flakes of peeling skin or warts.
Apply one drop 3 to 4 times a day until the problems disappear.
15. Improves eyesight.
Drop 1-2 drops of Frankincense oil into your palm, dip your index finger into the oil and then massage both temples with the index finger. It can brighten your vision and improve the eyes’ focusing ability. (Do not drop it directly into your eyes!)
16. Removes musty odors.
Drop a few drops of oil into a small bowl of water and the room will begin to smell fresh.
17. Oral health.
Frankincense oil is useful in preventing oral health problems such as bad breath, toothaches, sinus pain, in treating canker sores or other infections.
Try mixing frankincense oil with baking soda and coconut oil – you can make your own toothpaste.
18. Improves sleep.
In the bedroom, add Frankincense oil to the humidifier before bedtime. This will slow your breathing, relax tense nerves and anxiety. You will sleep like a baby!
19. Enhances the effect of other essential oils.
A layer of frankincense oil applied over another essential oil improves that oil’s properties and helps the oils absorb deeper into the cells.
Where to buy frankincense oil
You can buy frankincense oil in many health food stores or shops that specialize in aromatherapy.
Essential oils should be used only topically, not internally, because they are very concentrated. If you want to use its healing effects internally, an alternative is supplements with its extracts.
When consuming capsules with the extract, follow the information listed on the package.
