Geraniums are very popular to grow. These undemanding flowers with richly colored blooms most often adorn window boxes or outdoor pots. Usually they thrive almost everywhere, but sometimes their leaves begin to yellow or they don’t produce any flowers. That indicates that we made a mistake in cultivation, or that the plant’s conditions have changed. However, nothing is lost — the geranium can still be saved.
The plant reacts to transplanting or a change in location
The lower leaves most often turn yellow after transplanting. It’s nothing serious; simply remove the yellowed leaves and give the plant time to get used to its new spot. Before long it will sprout beautiful green leaves. Geraniums are not very tolerant of excessive watering. Standing water in the saucer and overwatering can cause leaves to yellow and drop. In that case stop watering the geranium and keep the soil only slightly moist.
Also reduce watering if the geranium has overly humid air around it. Water it preferably with rainwater or soft water. Never pour cold tap water on it. Cold water not only causes leaf yellowing, but the geranium could even die completely. You can tell the water is too cold if only the edges of the leaves are yellow.
The geranium lacks nutrients or is affected by a fungal infection
Geranium leaves also turn yellow if the plant lacks nutrients. Fertilize them every two weeks, and more often if they are flowering. You’ll see that it will soon start doing well again. The plant does not do well in hot, dry weather either. In summer hide it more in the shade so its leaves don’t get burned. You can also move it to a cooler place and water it more frequently.
If the plant’s leaves are yellowing and it isn’t setting flowers, a fungal infection may be to blame
If you suspect disease, immediately separate the sick plant from the others. That way you will prevent the spread of the infection to other geraniums. Whatever the reason for the yellowing, always remove the yellow leaves so the plant can produce new ones. Water preferably in the morning or later in the evening. Then it will reward you with a splendid display of blooms and bright green leaves.
